Florence A. Hamrick, Editor
Florence A. Hamrick is Editor of the Journal of College Student Development (JCSD), and previously served two terms on the JCSD Editorial Board. She is Associate Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Iowa State University. She received the Ph.D. in Higher Education from Indiana University in 1996, the M.A. in College Student Personnel from Ohio State University in 1983, and the B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. Dr. Hamrick has also served as Associate Director of Placement and Career Services at Wichita State University. From November 2003-February 2004, Dr. Hamrick was a Visiting Researcher at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand, affiliated with the TU Research and Consultancy Institute and the Ph.D. Program in Integrated Sciences.
Her scholarly interests center on women's issues, the experiences of non-dominant populations in higher education, and professional development. She is author or co-author of more than 40 publications, including one book Foundations of Student Affairs Practice (2002) and 20 refereed or invited journal articles. Her more than 65 presentations include two papers at international research conferences and seven invited lectures. She is a previous ACPA Media Assistant Editor and has reviewed scholarly book proposals and manuscripts for four publishing companies.
Dr. Hamrick is currently President of the Iowa Educational Research and Evaluation Association (IEREA). She is active in a number of professional organizations including the American College Personnel Association, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the Association for the Study of Higher Education, the American Educational Research Association (Division J), and the Iowa Student Personnel Association. Dr. Hamrick was named an ACPA "Emerging Scholar" in 2001, and she received the Outstanding Early Career Research Award from the ISU College of Education in 1997. She received the 1995 Raleigh Holmstedt Dissertation Fellowship at Indiana University and was a Fellow at the NCES Advanced Studies Seminar (1993) and the AERA Institutes on Statistical Analysis for Education Policy (1993 and 1996).
John H. Schuh, Associate Editor
John H. Schuh is distinguished professor of educational leadership at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He was department chair from August 1998 to June 30, 2005. Previously he held administrative and faculty assignments at Wichita State University, Indiana University (Bloomington) and Arizona State University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and his Master of Counseling and Ph.D. degrees from Arizona State.
Schuh is the author, co-author or editor of over 200 publications, including 22 books and monographs, and over 60 book chapters, and 100 articles. His most recent books are Student Success in College (with George D. Kuh, Jillian Kinzie and Elizabeth Whitt) and Promoting Reasonable Expectations (with Thomas E. Miller and Barbara E. Bender). He is author or co-author of The Life Cycle of the Department Chair (with Walt Gmelch) and Contemporary Financial Issues in Student Affairs, Foundations of Student Affairs Practice (with Florence A. Hamrick and Nancy J. Evans), Involving Colleges (with George Kuh, Elizabeth Whitt and Associates), Assessment Practice in Student Affairs and Assessment in Student Affairs (both with M. Lee Upcraft), Creating Successful Partnerships between Academic and Student Affairs (co-edited with Elizabeth Whitt), and Advising Student Groups and Organizations (with Norb Dunkel).
Currently he is editor in chief of the New Directions for Student Services Sourcebook Series and is associate editor of the Journal of College Student Development. He has served on other editorial boards including the editorial board of Net Results, NASPA's electronic journal and The Journal of College Student Retention. He has served as Editor and Chair of the ACPA Media Board, and was a member of the editorial board of the Journal of College Student Development. Schuh has made over 220 presentations and speeches to campus-based, regional and national meetings. He has served as a consultant to 50 colleges, universities, and other organizations.
Schuh has served on the governing boards of the American College Personnel Association, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (twice) and the Association of College and University Housing Officers (twice). He is a member of the Evaluator Corps and the Accreditation review Council of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. He was program chair of the 1996 NASPA Annual Conference in Atlanta and convention chair of the 2000 NASPA Annual Conference in Indianapolis.
John Schuh has received the Contribution to Knowledge Award and the Presidential Service Award from the American College Personnel Association, the Contribution to Research or Literature Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and the Leadership and Service Award and the S. Earl Thompson Award from the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International. The American College Personnel Association has elected him as a Senior Scholar Diplomat. He was chosen as one of 75 Diamond Honorees by ACPA in 1999 and a Pillar of the Profession by NASPA in 2001. He is a member of the Iowa Academy of Education.
Schuh received a Fulbright award to study higher education in Germany in 1994. He also was a member of a NASPA-IV West team that studied higher education at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1997. He attended the Oxford Roundtable in Oxford, England in summer, 2002.
